Overview 2000- 1980's and 1990's

1980s

  • JLPA membership nears 700 by 1980. By the end of the decade, members number more than 1,000 and the membership sponsor requirements are relaxed. Active members must move to Sustainer status by the age of 40.
  • In 1981, A Private Collection is published, the JLPA's award-winning cookbook. Its success inspires the follow-up companion, Private Collection 2, in 1984. Members staff a cookbook distribution center as demand for the books reaches national proportions.
  • The JLPA invests $25,000 in renovation of the Latham-Hopkins Gatehouse and helps secure its inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • The Junior League of Palo Alto, Inc. changes its name to the Junior League of Palo Alto•Mid Peninsula, Inc. to better reflect its service area and membership demographics.
  • Junior Leagues are established in Great Britain, Canada and Mexico, and the Association name is changed to Association of Junior Leagues International.
  • A third JLPA•MP fund raiser, the fashion show, is established in 1988 to provide the funds to meet growing community needs and membership interest.

1990s

  • The Discovery Shop adopts a new name, The Shop, and relocates to downtown Menlo Park in 1993. Member volunteer shifts requirements are eliminated as The Shop is converted to a paid staff. The Holiday Boutique, growing from a successful member social event, is established as a community-oriented fund raiser in 1993.
  • The JLPA•MP adopts its first focus area, "The Health and Education of Women and Youth," in 1994. The League collaborates with Youth and Family Assistance to create Daybreak Shelter, the country's first suburban shelter for homeless youth in the country located in Redwood City.
  • The Tech Museum opens to international acclaim in 1994, the culmination of a 16-year leadership role by the JLPA•MP and the Junior League of San Jose.
  • JLPA•MP authors a white paper on youth violence prevention in 1994, which wins legislative support in Sacramento. League members are invited to Washington, D.C. to address a Congressional subcommittee on youth violence.
  • The League becomes "age silent," removing the maximum age to join as a Provisional and the requirement to become a Sustainer by the age of 40.
  • In 1996, the JLPA•MP completes a major remodel of the Gatehouse, equipping it for the high tech needs of the 21st century.
  • The JLPA•MP's focus area is changed to "Developing the Potential of Families."
  • The Association of Junior Leagues International elects its first Latina and African-American Presidents.
  • The JLPA•MP launches its website in 1998 and creates a volunteer Webmaster position.
