First Teachers

First Teachers is a project of the Bring Me a BookTM Foundation, which was founded in 1997 by Judy Koch. The organization envisions a read-aloud culture where all families place a high priority on literacy and are actively involved in their children's education.

The First Teachers mission is to engage and educate parents and caregivers to the importance of reading aloud, encourage a daily ritual of reading to children, and foster an early love of reading and learning. The program targets the "first teachers" of children, teaching the importance of reading aloud with young children, thereby supporting emergent literacy skills, school readiness, and family bonding.

League volunteers will develop the potential of families by empowering parents with young children to become their "first teachers."
