What is the Junior League of Palo Alto•Mid Peninsula?

For 50 years, the Junior League of Palo Alto•Mid Peninsula, Inc. (JLPA•MP) has been serving the needs
of our community through the outstanding leadership and effective action of our trained volunteers. Since our founding in 1965, the JLPA•MP has supported more than 94 community service projects, awarded nearly 200 community grants to area nonprofits and contributed thousands of volunteer hours to our community. We are a member of the Association of Junior Leagues International, which is comprised of more than 155,000 women in 293 Leagues in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

How do Junior League members make an impact in our community?

Each year, our members contribute thousands of hours of volunteer service to our community by: 1) creating, funding and staffing projects that address critical community needs; 2) making grants to local nonprofits; 3) partnering with local nonprofits to provide trained volunteers for special community events such as National Rebuilding Together Day and the annual Menlo Park Firefighters’ Pancake Breakfast; and 4) offering legislative support to community agencies whose causes support our mission.

How does the JLPA•MP support its community work?

We support a variety of fundraising activities that allow us to provide more than $150,000 in financial support to our community projects as well as community grants to local nonprofits. Our current fundraisers include The Shop (our Menlo Park resale store), our Endowment Fund, and our Scavenger Hunt, scheduled for Spring 2016. We also seek funding through corporate grants and other development activities.

What’s my time commitment as a member?

Your volunteer time commitment will differ each year, depending on the committee you choose to participate in and the level of leadership you assume. As a new member, you are asked to volunteer approximately 50 hours of service. You’ll invest your time in a variety of trainings and community service opportunities, designed to help you fully understand the depth and breadth of our work in the community.

What’s my financial commitment as a member?

Annual dues for new members are $266: this includes $176 in tax-deductible membership dues and a course fee of $90. As an Active member, your annual financial contributions include membership dues of $176, a donation of $200 worth of items to The Shop, and a $100 pledge of support for the Scavenger Hunt, all of which are tax-deductible contributions.

What’s in it for me?

Junior League members gain valuable leadership training and hands-on experience in the community.
We provide members with both formal and hands-on training to help you become an effective volunteer and civic/nonprofit leader. You’ll have opportunities to gain such valuable skills as marketing, project management, event planning, fundraising and development, nonprofit board governance and financial management.
